Are you a freelancer or solopreneur making a living doing what you love, but having trouble managing the business side of things?

For many creatives and small business owners, finances can be scary to look at and manage. If that sounds like you, accounting and bookkeeping software will help make your life a thousand times easier.

LessAccounting is a simplified accounting software aimed primarily at small businesses and freelancers.

It’s easy to navigate, even if you’re a beginner who has never used this type of software before.

SMB Guide’s Verdict for LessAccounting

LessAccounting is an excellent accounting software for freelancers, solopreneurs, and other micro-businesses that don’t need an extensive roster of features.

Based on that, its pricing, and user reviews from sites like G2, we give LessAccounting an overall rating of 7.2 out of 10 stars.

In this review of LessAcounting, I’ve followed SMB Guide’s detailed criteria for evaluating the bookkeeping software.

Strangely enough, it also makes for a great solution for businesses that need to track mileage and company vehicle usage.

That said, no mobile app and the lack of advanced accounting features like payroll processing and tax management means LessAccounting probably isn’t the most scalable solution for larger companies.

Pricing & Plans

LessAccounting gives you the option of purchasing an inexpensive plan that includes tools for invoicing clients, accepting payments, creating monthly budgets, and more.

This plan is extremely affordable and gives you just about everything you need to maintain your books.

LessAccounting Pricing

They also offer an expert bookkeeping service. This service is much more expensive (as is to be expected), but can be worth it if you’re someone who would rather not deal with any of the behind-the-scenes stuff.

The bookkeeping copilot service is priced depending on how many expenses your business has.

General Ledger and Chart of Accounts

The general ledger and chart of accounts in LessAccounting are fairly straightforward.

LessAccounting general ledger

At the top of the page, there’s a button that you can click to invite your accountant. This will take you to a page where you can invite people to your account – either a trusted member or a bookkeeper.

If you’re managing your books yourself without the help of a professional, you do have the option of adding or editing auto-categorized transactions as you deem necessary.

You can also add tags to deposits and outgoing expenses.

Bank Integration and Reconciliation

LessAccounting integrates with more than 9000 financial institutions. The software uses Plaid to connect to your account, which makes the integration process quick and easy.

For full transparency, I use Chime, which isn’t a traditional bank per se, but I was able to connect my account and had no issues importing my transactions.

The importing process did take several minutes, but that seems to be the norm.

LessAccounting bank integration

You can also connect to Stripe, which will automatically sync to your account. Since I don’t use Stripe, I wasn’t able to test out this specific feature.

Financial Reporting

LessAccounting offers pretty standard financial reporting with standard statements like chart of accounts, profit and loss, and balance sheet.

Here’s a snapshot of the different reports you can run in the software:

LessAccounting financial reporting

AP and AR Management

LessAccounting doesn’t offer vendor management or assistance with bill payments. However, they do provide an invoicing feature that allows you to send one-off or recurring invoices to clients.

You can also accept payments via their online portal. I actually found the invoice creation process to be more pleasant and less cumbersome than the invoicing software I’m already using (Wave Accounting).

It was intuitive and super easy to use.

LessAccounting invoicing

Payroll and Tax Management

LessAccounting doesn’t include any payroll processing. If this is a feature that’s important to you, you’ll need an add-on software like Wagepoint, for example.

It also doesn’t offer much in the way of tax preparation. While it’s compliant with tax laws, it doesn’t generate tax forms or send you filing reminders.

Both of these are reasons why I believe LessAccounting is best suited for freelancers. Its lack of scalability means it falls short as a solution for larger companies that have more than a handful of employees or who want to keep everything finance and tax-related in one place.

User Interface and User Experience

The whole point of LessAccounting is to make your accounting easier and less of a headache, and I have to say, I think their interface is true to that goal.

The design is clean and easy to navigate. I’m not a finance person, but it was very clear to me what each of the different menu items were and where I needed to go to find things.

Here’s how the dashboard looks when you first log in:

LessAccounting dashboard

I also think the brand overall is aesthetically pleasing, which may or may not matter to you. For me, it was certainly a pro and made the whole user experience that much better.

One thing to mention is that some users have complained that the software is slow and can be laggy at times.

It’s not something I personally experienced, but it was a common theme in customer reviews I read.

Integrations, Compatibility, & Supported Platforms

LessAccounting takes a very bare-bones approach to accounting, but their rich API allows you to get access to other features you might need through other softwares.

They support dozens of integrations with third-party applications like Wagepoint (payroll), Highrise (client relationship management), Basecamp (project management), and LessTimeSpent (LessAccounting’s sister software for time tracking).

LessAccounting integrations

You can learn more about the applications and banks they integrate with here. The software is 100% web-based, meaning no mobile apps that you can use on the go.

They try to spin this as a positive thing by stating their website is “very convenient.” However, for a software that seems to be aimed primarily at solopreneurs – who are often digital nomads – having no app for on-the-go seems like a pretty big disadvantage.

Customer Support

If you need help getting set up or have any issues regarding your account, you can call customer support at 1-415-598-7620.

They offer live phone support every day from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST, so there’s plenty of time to get help.

Along with that, they also have a support chat box that can be accessed from their website. This chat box is accessible regardless of whether or not you’re signed in.

I personally tested it out and they got back to me with an answer to my simple query in just a couple minutes.

LessAccounting — Unique Features

LessAccounting has a pretty neat feature for tracking vehicles and mileage that I’ve not really seen included in other accounting softwares.

You can add multiple company vehicles to the software and then track the mileage for each one. Mileage tracking can be done in two different ways – either but manually inputting the number of miles for each trip or the start and end values of the odometer.

LessAccounting mileage tracking

At the top of the page, you’ll see a summary of each of your company’s vehicles and how many miles they’ve driven for whatever date range you’ve specified.

Now, if you’re a solopreneur or freelancer like myself, this feature likely isn’t going to be useful to you unless you do something like DoorDash or Instacart.

But if you run a business that uses multiple company vehicles, a feature like this already rolled into your accounting software may be extremely valuable.
