Multi-factor Security & Authentication
A password manager’s authentication is a crucial feature as it adds an extra degree of security by requesting additional information beyond a login and password before granting access to the account.
With 1Password, you can secure your vaults with two-factor authentication.
This software also maintains a list of trusted devices, allowing users to decide which computers or phones need to be authenticated and which ones can be left unlocked.
With 256-bit AES encryption, 1Password safeguards data with the same encryption used by governments and banks worldwide.
You can create a strong master password for 1Password which is simple to remember and unlikely to be guessed by anyone else.
A zero-knowledge policy implemented by 1Password ensures that your data is not tracked, stored, or sold. Additionally, 1Password uses an SRP (Secure Remote Password) protocol to safeguard any other data, including master passwords and Secret Keys, against hackers intercepting data transferred to the server.
When you initially log into your 1Password vault, you must enter a 34-character Secret Key that 1Password offers for added security. The Secret Key is kept on the devices’ 1Password applications and browsers following the initial login.
The software also offers a download link with a PDF containing your account email, Secret Key, and space for you to write down your master password as an Emergency Kit to help manage the Secret Key.
When someone copies a password, 1Password makes sure they aren’t visible for very long because it removes the copied passwords from the clipboard automatically after 90 seconds.
This stops information copied from your clipboard from accidentally being shared or copied. To access vaults, desktop users can configure TouchID fingerprint biometrics or Windows Hello biometrics.
To prevent any breaches, users can also use an auto-lock option that locks them out of the app after a predetermined time.
One-time Passwords
You can always have a backup plan in case your device is misplaced, stolen, or destroyed if you create one-time passwords with 1Password.
The one-time passwords can be easily accessed and stored in 1Password when a website supports two-step verification. After entering your username and password, 1Password immediately copies your one-time password for 30 seconds to the clipboard.
1Password offers autofill for time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) for various applications that allow multi-factor authentication. One-time passwords can be saved in the 1Password browser extension, 1Password apps, or on 1Password.com.
However, it is not advisable to be used to manage your 1Password login.
Password Capture and Generation
1Password can import and export data from nearly all other password managers as a csv file. All you need to do is simply log in to 1Password and go to the import page and choose where you want to add data from.
It allows you to import passwords, credit card information, and other data in a secure and fast manner.
When you position your cursor in the entry fields of sites where you have saved login credentials, 1Password displays recommended credentials. You can click on the appropriate login to fill out the fields.
Another useful feature of the 1Password extension is that users can just click on an entry to go straight to that site’s login page.
Weak passwords increase the risk of breaches. Data theft or account compromise might occur from the ease of guessing or cracking them.
Therefore, strong passwords are essential and should contain a combination of symbols, numbers, and letters. The 1Password password generator can help quickly build strong passwords to help you enhance security of your accounts.
With a single button click, the generator creates complicated and one-of-a-kind passwords and you can eliminate the mental strain of attempting to remember a mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols.
You can generate a 20-character Smart Password with mixed cases, letters, numbers, and symbols with only one click or select Random Password from the dropdown box if your password needs to be a little longer.
If you generate a new password for any account, 1Password replaces your previous password on the website with the new password. Additionally, this new password is saved in your 1Password vault by the browser extension.
Lastly, there is no password generation limit while using 1Password. You can generate and store an infinite number of safe, one-of-a-kind passwords for each account.
Password Sharing
1Password allows users to share their password with anyone and even those who use 1Password can access your login credentials. All you need to do is click the Share button in the options menu to send a password or any other item from your vault.
It also allows you to create a link that will expire after one view, an hour, a day, seven days, 14 days, or thirty days as per your choice.
Additionally, you have the option to limit access to the link to certain individuals or make it available to anybody with the link.
Password inheritance feature that allows you to leave your account to someone else after your death is not available in 1Password.
However, you can nominate family members to recover the account if you’re using the Families plan.
User Interface and User Experience
1Password is quite simple to set up and use with a straightforward layout.
The installation and download processes are easy to follow and you don’t need to enter any special characters or digits while setting your master password.
When you enter your master password for the first time to connect your account, 1Password gives you a special Secret Key. The 34-digit Secret Key is kept in the Emergency Kit, a PDF file that every user receives when they create a 1Password account.
The software’s user interface has a clean, contemporary style, and users can modify the font density and switch to dark mode.
You can easily navigate the user interface of 1Password’s desktop application and 1Password offers plenty of tutorials to help users get the most out of the software.
Integrations and Compatibility
1Password offers various integrations for provision, reporting, security and more. Some of the integrations offered by the software include:
- User provisioning with Google Workspace, Okta, OneLogin and more
- Events reporting with Splunk, Panther, Sumo Logic and more
- Alerts and notifications with Slack
- Two-factor authentication with Duo
- Virtual cards with Brex, Ramp and Privacy.com
- Masked email with Fastmail
This software offers many useful integrations including integrations with services like Privacy and Fastmail. When registering for new accounts, Fastmail customers can secure their genuine email addresses by creating masked emails using 1Password to be more anonymous.
The software also lets users generate Privacy Cards in partnership with Privacy.com. Users can create distinct payment details for every service they pay for with Privacy.
This adds further security to data since users don’t need to enter personal credit card information to pay for various apps or services. The browser extension from 1Password is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and Brave.
1Password’s mobile app is compatible with both Android and iOS and resembles the excellent user interface of its desktop equivalents. The saved data and all login credentials are fully accessible through the Android and iPhone applications.
Customer Support
1Password offers direct support via email, Twitter and forum support channels. The email support is incredibly quick and you can expect a reply within an hour.
Apart from this, they also have a support forum and an FAQ section. The support forum at 1Password is great for urgent questions. Both 1Password staff members and other users contribute to this community.
If you’re looking for answers to frequently asked questions, 1Password has a comprehensive FAQ and searching user forum. It addresses the majority of the primary problems and provides a wealth of expert troubleshooting in the form of in-depth how-to manuals.
1Password — Unique Features
Wondering what makes 1Password stand out? Here are the unique features to know.
Masked email
In addition to managing passwords, 1Password also lets you handle emails. You can create completely anonymous email addresses from the sign-up page of 1Password.
1Password, along with FastMail integration, offers a clever tool for 1Password users who have a Fastmail membership.
Users can generate distinctive email addresses for their online logins by using masked emails to avoid receiving spam and trash emails in their genuine inboxes.
These masked emails can be turned on and off from within 1Password and your primary Fastmail account is automatically notified of any emails sent to your masked accounts.
You can secure your online privacy and security with this feature and reduce the chance of your real email addresses getting compromised or exposed in data breaches.
Travel mode
Travel Mode is a feature that comes with every 1Password account. Vaults can also help you keep your data protected when you travel.
You can also enable Travel Mode for your team or family members who are traveling abroad and some data is not safe when crossing national boundaries.
The Teams plan gives the admin user the ability to manage Travel Mode on employees’ accounts. This feature is ideal for company owners who want to avoid authorities accessing passwords or critical work-related documents.
Maintaining access to “travel-safe” data can be ensured by storing it in different vaults that are set to travel mode. Non-travel-safe data is protected by having the vaults removed while crossing borders.
Travel Mode restricts visibility to vaults that you have designated as “Safe for Travel.” You can conceal critical data, like social network logins and company encryption keys when traveling across borders using 1Password’s Travel Mode.
Vaults holding private data will remain concealed until Travel Mode is disabled and all vaults can be accessed again by turning off Travel Mode.
