Multi-Factor Security and Authentication

Keeper supports MFA with text messages, mobile authenticator apps, RSA SecureID, Duo Security, Keeper DNA, or hardware security keys.

1Password requires a combination of two keys to open stored on your device and not accessible by anyone, including 1Password.

The first key is your account master password set by you. It’s the only password you need to remember.

The second key is a feature unique to 1Password. The Secret Key, stored on your device and nowhere else, is a 128-bit, machine-generated code that’s impossible to crack. It uses Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2 (PBKDF2) to ensure security. 

You may also use additional 2FA with a hardware security key, like YubiKey or Titan, or a third-party authenticator app installed on your mobile device. For example:

Keeper can be used as an authenticator app for any password entry that supports Google Authenticator, as long as you set up the integration first.

Keeper has a Password Generator tool capable of generating complex, unbreakable passwords. Much like 1Password, you can choose password length and what type of characters to include.

Tap the dice icon to create a random password that meets the criteria you set, copy it to your clipboard to log in, and save it in the vault.

Capturing new passwords is simple. You’re prompted to save login info as you login for the first time. You can also import your saved passwords from another password manager or by CSV.

1Password’s password generator creates passwords of up to 20 characters. You can choose the length and incorporate numbers and symbols. Upper and lowercase letters are default settings.

You can also use the dropdown menu to create a memorable password that will generate a four-word phrase that’s hard to guess and relatively easy to remember.

To import your existing passwords in bulk from one of these programs, just choose from the list.

Password Sharing

Keeper offers a one-time share feature and vault-to-vault password sharing. With the one-time share feature, you can share the record with a time limit and revoke access at any time.

To share a vault, the other user must have a Keeper account, but they can sign up for a free account if they’re not already a user. You can set permissions to allow people you share with to Edit, Share, Edit & Share, or View only.

1Password allows you to share passwords with guest accounts, which is useful if you work with contractors, vendors, or external partners who need access to specific accounts.

You can also individual items and choose to make access temporary. You can even share with people who do not have a 1Password account.

Emergency Access

Keeper allows you to provide access to designated family and friends (up to 5 people) in the event of an emergency. You can choose how long you have to be incapable of managing your account before your contacts can access the data in your account.

You can also set the level of access people have and revoke or change permissions at any time.

If you are locked out of your account or incapacitated in some way, your designated emergency person can make a request for access. If you do not respond to the request within the time frame you define, access is granted.

This is useful for any number of reasons; for example, if you die, are unconscious or missing, or simply lose your master password and get locked out.

1Password recommends printing an emergency kit to record your account information, and storing it in a secure location like a safe or safe deposit box.

Keeper uses a breach monitoring feature called BreachWatch, but it does not have all the bells and whistles offered by 1Password.

Account Recovery

When you set up your Keeper account, you’re prompted to set up a 24-word recovery phrase you are expected to save in a secure location. If you forget your master password and lose your recovery phrase, you cannot recover your account.

If you lose your password and have a printed copy of your 1Password Emergency Kit, you have all the info you need to recover your account.

Other options include using Windows Hello on your mobile or trying to sign in on another recognized device.

If nothing else works, you can ask a family member with admin privileges or a team administrator to help you recover your account.

They can allow you to choose a new password, which will also generate a new Secret Key.

In addition, it generates a 128-bit Secret Key, which is combined with your account password to encrypt your data. Generated passwords are SOC II Type 2, GDPR and CCPA compliant. 

Other security features include:

• Clipboard management: Set to automatically remove passwords from your clipboard after use
• Code signature validation: Verifies that you’re trying to sign into a legitimate website before filling your sensitive information to foil phishing attempts

Some 1Password users have complained about the lack of live support. However, they have multi-channel support via email, Twitter, a comprehensive knowledge base, and a user forum.

Standout Features of 1Password

1Password uses a unique SRP protocol to authenticate login details without sending your password over the internet, so it can’t be stolen in transit and also has a travel mode to hide selected vaults when you’re traveling, making login inaccessible even to authorities.

Keeper vs. 1Password: SMB Guide’s Verdict

Keeper and 1Password offer similar base features and reliable security for individuals and businesses. Both have high-level security measures, intuitive interface, and a security monitoring dashboard.

Keeper is less expensive and offers better customer service across the board. With such similar offerings, the deciding factors between Keeper and 1Password depend on what features are most important to you.

1Password has a nicer interface and some additional safety features that might make it more attractive to people with major security concerns. Either password manager will keep your data safe and secure and each is easy to install, learn. and use.

Overall, I chose 1Password for its attractive interface and extra layer of security, but it is a very close call and 1Password is more expensive for larger accounts.
