Overall, Password Boss is a decent password manager that will meet most SMB’s needs. It’s got easy password capture, an intuitive sharing feature, and excellent security.

However, the locally installed nature of the application, along with unreliable form filling and the fact that there’s no recovery process, make it not one of the strongest competitors on the market.

It’s still a good software, but there are even better competitors out there.

In this Password Boss review, I’ve followed SMB Guide’s detailed criteria for evaluating password managers.

Pricing & Plans

Password Boss doesn’t share their pricing and plan information publicly. There are two plan options for individuals — free or premium — and at least one plan option for businesses.

Since pricing information isn’t available on their website, it’s difficult to give an exact range in terms of plan cost. However, based on multiple sources, paid subscriptions range from around $3 to $20 per month.

Multi-factor Security & Authentication

Two-factor (2FA) and multi-factor (MFA) authentication add an additional layer of security to your account, making it and all of your passwords stored inside less vulnerable to hacking.

Password Boss allows you to enable two-factor authentication on any plan to keep your account safe. This means when you log in, you’ll be required to enter both your master password and a verification code.

To enable 2FA, you’ll need to install a time-based, one-time password (TOTP) app on your device. Password Boss is compatible with most authentication apps, so you’ll have some choice on what to use.

However, it would be nice if Password Boss also offered SMS or email 2FA options.

One-time Passwords

You can use Password Boss for time-based one-time password (TOTP) 2FA authentication when logging into your account with your master password.

You can also use Password Boss to create one-time passwords (OTPs) for other websites and applications.

Password Capture and Generation

Password Boss automatically captures and imports your username and password to your Password Boss account when you log into your other accounts online.

And, when you capture a new password, it’ll rate the strength of the password to give you an idea of how secure it is.

You can also use Password Boss to generate new passwords. By default, the passwords it generates are all at least 20-characters long and use all character types (letter, number, symbol) to make them as secure as possible.

Password Sharing

Password Boss allows you to share single items, multiple items, or entire folders at once. If the intended recipient doesn’t already have a Password Boss account, they’ll be prompted to create one before the items are shared.

You can create a shared item by clicking on “Share Center” in the left menu and clicking the plus sign.

You can choose between different permissions — such as allowing recipients to update passwords or simply read only. You can also choose whether you’d like to share the item indefinitely or set an expiration date.

I could see this feature being particularly useful if you’re a company that works temporarily with clients and freelancers for specified contact periods.

All shared items are encrypted so only you and the recipient will have access to the shared data. The sharing process typically takes only a few minutes from start to finish.

User Interface and User Experience

Password Boss’ platform has an interface that’s overall easy to navigate. Its form filling feature is especially user-friendly.

However, I can see how the locally installed nature of the software could be a downside for some. It makes the setup process a little more complex and lengthy.

When I was trying to download the software, I ran into a couple problems. First, the software automatically downloads as a Windows application — which was inaccessible to me since I’m on a Mac.

Once I downloaded and attempted to install the Mac version, I was prompted to install “Rosetta,” which is an Apple software that allows Intel-based features to run on Apple silicon Macs.

All-in-all, I found the setup and sign-up process to be a bit more cumbersome when there are plenty of alternatives on the market that allow you to sign up and go in just a couple of clicks.

Integrations and Compatibility

I couldn’t find very much information about Password Boss’ integrations on their site or knowledge base. It seems that they only offer three integrations:

• ConnectWise
• Kaseya BMS
• Autotask PSA

As far as compatibility, Password Boss has apps available for Windows desktops, Mac desktops, and both Apple and Android mobile devices.

Password Boss is unique from a lot of other password managers because it’s a locally installed software. While this does come with some cons, it also means better performance and gives you more control over your data’s security.

What really makes it stand out is that it was designed specifically to be a solid end-to-end solution for managed service providers (MSPs) who need to safely store customer password information.

In addition, you can designate someone who will have emergency access to your account in case of an emergency while still retaining full control.
