Multi-Factor Security and Authentication
For extra RoboForm security, you can enable authentication using One-Time Password (OTP) via email/SMS, or 2FA using TOTP based authentication apps, including Google Authenticator, Authy, and Microsoft Authenticator.
In addition to your master password or biometric (face or fingerprint) ID, 1Password uses a Secret Key stored on your trusted devices to authenticate logins.
The Secret Key is stored on your authorized devices and never on the 1Password server. It’s a 128-bit, auto-generated code created with Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2 (PBKDF2) to ensure ultimate security.
You can beef up the 2FA security with a hardware security key, like YubiKey or Titan, or by using a third-party authenticator app on your mobile device.
1Password can serve as a 2FA authenticator to gain access to sites you visit.
✅ Winner: 1Password
One-Time Passwords
RoboForm’s two-factor authentication requires your login credentials plus a passcode to access your account. The passcode is generated from two pieces of information, a QR code or secret key stored in RoboForm and on your device, and a code generated on the fly.
1Password can be used to quickly access one-time passwords if you turn on 2FA verification for a website. When 2FA is activated, the website you’re visiting will generate a Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) inside your 1Password dashboard.
You can use it by scanning a QR code with your mobile device or copying and pasting a code manually into the answer field.
✅ Winner: 1Password
Password Capture and Generation
RoboForm’s password generation tool offers choices for generating strong passwords. Much like 1Password’s password generator, you can choose password length and the kind of characters to include using on/off toggles.
You can also opt to generate a random passphrase instead.
1Password automatically generates passwords of up to 20 characters. You decide the length of your password using a slider, then decide whether to incorporate numbers and symbols.
The generator will automatically render upper- and lower-case letters.
✅ Winner: RoboForm
Password Sharing
RoboForm offers various sharing features. You can securely share a RoboForm data item (Login, Identity, or Safenote) with another user or multiple users.
To share more than one item, you can create a shared folder. Only the sender can make changes to items, and recipient access can be revoked at any time.
Share recipients must have a RoboForm account, but they can sign up for a free account if they’re not already a user.
1Password allows you to share passwords with a specified number of guest accounts to allow contractors, vendors, or external partners access to passwords you specify.
It also allows you to share individual items and designate how long access is allowed.
✅ Winner: 1Password
Emergency Access
RoboForm allows you to designate a trusted contact to securely access your RoboForm Data in an emergency. This is handy in case you die, are incapacitated or missing, or simply lose access to your account and need help to recover it.
Your emergency must have a RoboForm account, but it can be a free account. (Free account users cannot designate an emergency contact). You can revoke emergency contact access at any time.
Once inside your account, your emergency contacts have access to all your RoboForm Data, but can only download some items to their own account.
1Password does not have access to your account, so recovery is a problem if you lose your master password and have a new, unrecognized laptop.
The company recommends that you physically print an “emergency kit” to record your sensitive account information and store it in a secure location.
Other options include using a biometric login on another device, and following the steps to change your password. You’ll then have to change it on all your devices.
✅ Winner: RoboForm
Security Dashboard
RoboForm’s security center analyzes your passwords and makes recommendations to strengthen your security.
Inside the dashboard, you can see and update compromised logins—passwords that were part of a breach—or increase a weak password’s strength quickly and easily.
1Password’s dashboard has a Watchtower tab which monitors data breaches through haveibeenpwned.com. The reporting features include a comprehensive password evaluation to ensure the strength of your passwords.
✅ Winner: Tie
Account Recovery
If you forget your master password, RoboForm offers several options for account recovery. You can use a biometric login to access your account, use the forgot password feature with your email address, or rely on your emergency contact to gain access.
You can change your master password at any time.
With 1Password, if you switch, reset, or lose a device, you could be in trouble unless you have a printed copy of your 1Password Emergency Kit with your secret key and master password.
Backup options include using Windows Hello on another recognized device. If you have a designated admin for your work or family group, they may be able to help you recover your account.
✅ Winner: RoboForm
Browser Extensions
RoboForm works with Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Chrome OS. Extensions are available for all major desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Brave.
1Password works with all the most popular browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Safari. It also has apps for macOS, iOS (including watchOS), Windows, Android, Linux, and Your Command Line.

1Password offers the highest level of data security available with dual-layer AES-GCM-256 authenticated encryption for end-to-end protection and PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 for secret key generation.
Generated passwords are SOC II Type 2, GDPR, and CCPA compliant.
Additional security features:
- Clipboard management: removes copied passwords from your device clipboard after use.
- Code signature validation: Verifies that you’re signing into a legitimate website and not a phishing site.

- Biometric access: Unlock with your fingerprint on compatible devices.
- Secure Remote Password (SRP): Uses SRP protocol to authenticate login details instead of transmitting your password over the internet.
- 3rd party audits: Audits are regularly performed by third parties to ensure security features are up-to-date.

✅ Winner: Tie
Standout Features of RoboForm
RoboForm offers a wide range of features comparable to most password managers at a far cheaper price. While the ease of account recovery may be considered a vulnerability by some organizations, for most users, it’s more than sufficient.
Standout Features of 1Password
1Password keeps your password safe every step of the way by using a unique SRP protocol to authenticate logins without transmitting your password.
Which means your password is safe even during logins. The software also has a travel mode to hide your vaults when you’re traveling. Not even authorities can access your info.
RoboForm vs. 1Password: SMB Guide’s Verdict
RoboForm and 1Password offer very similar features and high-level security for individuals and businesses. Both have intuitive interfaces and security monitoring dashboards with similar features.
RoboForm is considerably less expensive and offers far better customer service. Since the two password managers are so similar, the RoboForm vs. 1Password winner depends on your preference for security over convenience or vice versa.
1Password’s strict security is less vulnerable because there are few recovery options. However, recovery options may prove critical if something happens to your devices.
If your organization’s users login to sites where sensitive information is stored, the ability to enforce employee compliance may be well worth the additional cost.
The best way to keep you, your family, and business safe online.
