MoonMail Review: Features, Pricing, & Alternatives

EmailOctopus has earned an overall rating of 6.25 out of 10.

I found the pricing to be a bit steep, especially for smaller businesses or startups like mine. With limited budgets, the higher cost can be a significant barrier. 

The email builder is easy to navigate, which is great. However, it lacks advanced customization options that I was hoping for. While basic personalization is available, the limited customization options for email templates and lack of a drag and drop editor were a bit of a letdown for me.

I downgraded the score a bit because I wasn’t able to sign up for my own account. I kept getting application errors when I tried to start my own, to compare it to the demo account.

Without my own account, I couldn’t even test a lot of the features, so that is heavily reflected in my low score. It appears the software doesn’t even function properly.

MoonMail offers four plans to choose from, and the only real difference between them is the upper limits on contacts, emails, and events.

Even the Lite plan offers sufficient limits for decently sized businesses.

Who it’s for: Enterprise-level businesses that don’t want limits on what they can do with the software.

Marketing Automation Capabilities

Unfortunately, I couldn’t test the marketing automation capabilities myself, since the demo doesn’t allow for you to make modifications and I couldn’t create my own account.

I discovered this when I first tried to build an email (I always do that first, so I can have a demo email to throw into an automation.)

So, what I would normally do in this circumstance is lean on tutorials and product documentation to at least guide me on what it is supposed to do.

But I can’t get that, because there’s virtually no documentation to support the software itself – just the developer side of things.

Email Builder

The email builder is lacking for most beginners. There’s no drag-and-drop email designer, making it hard to visualize things as you go.

I couldn’t find any templates to work from in the demo account, so I decided to create my own user account to see if I could find them there.

Unfortunately, though, I wasn’t able to create my own account. I continually got this error and gave up.

There’s a markup cheatsheet so you can build your own emails, and you have the option to switch to HTML, so it could work well for someone who’s more advanced, but not a beginner.

Personalization & Customization

There are plenty of dynamic variables for email subjects.

There are also plenty of options for dynamic variables in the body of the email:

That said, it’s not really clear how to personalize the email designs themselves with different colors and layouts, unless you understand how to code HTML.

Campaign Performance Tracking

What I really like about MoonMail is the demo account that lets me see actual analytics. Usually, when I test these, I don’t actually send emails, which makes it impossible to actually evaluate data. 

With this, you see account statistics: total emails sent, total delivered, complaints, and total bounced.

You also get audience metrics: active contacts, unsubscribed contacts, and unsubscribe rate.

You’ll also get aggregated campaign metrics: sent, delivered, opens, clicks, delivery rate, email open rate, and email click rate. 

You’ll also get the same data from specific campaigns, if you choose.

User Interface and User Experience

The user interface is straightforward and has easy navigation. I had a terrible user experience overall, though. I couldn’t fully demo the software since the demo itself doesn’t allow you to built templates and automations.

I couldn’t activate my account. The only thing I could do was sign up, enter my confirmation code from my sign up email. It rendered the software useless to me, and for that price tag? I would expect much better.

Integrations and Compatibility

Integrations are possible with MoonMail, but not something you can do without a developer’s help. You must use the MoonMail SDK or MoonMail Events API to connect other apps to your MoonMail account.

There’s documentation to help you, but unless you’re a developer or can afford to hire one, you’ll struggle.

Customer Support

You’d think I’d be able to figure out how to do things with the software from the customer support documentation. There’s a little guidance for setting up an account, and setting up A/B Testing. But the photos (I presume screenshots to guide you) don’t load.

The only option is to email them for help, but who knows when I could expect a response? There are a few tutorials, but all of that is useless without a working account.

MoonMail — Unique Features

I saw absolutely nothing about this software that makes it unique from others out there. I saw zero useful features, outside of the demo analytics.

Overall happiness and less frustration than any other auto-responder for starters. The ease of use and straight forward dashboard is nice on the eyes and there’s a template marketplace in case you aren’t feeling creative. Pretty awesome product if you ask me.
