The software is user-friendly, syncs across devices, and has a generous free plan with most of the features you need.

LastPass offers plans for personal use as well as business use. It offers two different options for businesses. The first, “Teams,” can accommodate up to 50 users. The “Business” is more suitable for large companies as it allows unlimited users.

Multi-Factor Security and Authentication

RoboForm offers two-factor authentication (2FA) on its Premium tier and higher. Its 2FA options are SMS (not very secure), email, and TOTP authentication (very secure) via apps like Google Authenticator.

LastPass uses a multi-factor authentication (MFA) system that modifies the required authentication variables based on user behavior and risk indications.

Options for MFA include LastPass’ native authenticator, other mobile authentication apps, and hardware tokens.

While RoboForm doesn’t have a one-time password feature per se, you can use it for TOTP (time-based one-time password) 2FA authentication. This feature enables you to easily take advantage of two-factor authentication on all of your online accounts.

LastPass comes equipped with a dedicated one-time password feature so you can feel safe logging into your accounts even if you’re on public WiFi or a shared device.

It works by allowing you to generate a password for a single use. Each password you create will have an expiration date and can only be used once.

This can help you avoid your real passwords being stolen (and your accounts getting hacked) if you inadvertently use a device that has software installed that can record your keystrokes.

RoboForm’s password capture is where it really shines compared to other solutions on the market. The pop-up that asks whether you want to save your credentials is reliable and more consistent than other tools I’ve tried — including LastPass.

LastPass’ password capture feature also works well, but I’ve personally encountered more instances where the capture window doesn’t pop up as intended than I have with RoboForm.

Both softwares also have a random password generation feature so you can quickly generate strong, unique passwords in just a click. These passwords are automatically saved in your RoboForm/LastPass account for easy retrieval later.

All in all, RoboForm and LastPass are pretty much neck in neck in this category. However, I’ve personally noticed that RoboForm’s password capture seems to be just slightly more consistent.

Password Sharing

RoboForm has two different methods for sharing items — “sending” and “sharing.”

“Sent” logins are transferred a single time and don’t update/sync if you later update the password in question. This is the only method available for free RoboForm users.

“Shared” logins, on the other hand, automatically sync between users when changes are made so everyone stays in the loop.

For free LastPass users, one-to-one password sharing is available. On the paid plans, you’ll be able to share items/folders with multiple users at once.

You can control the recipient’s access to the password through LastPass’ Sharing Center — including whether they can actually view the password (otherwise LastPass will simply autofill without actually revealing it to them) and whether you want to disconnect access.

Overall, the password sharing features for both of these softwares or solid. The only thing that gives LastPass a slight leg up is that you can completely block recipients from actually being able to view the password — which can help prevent unauthorized future access.

Emergency Access

RoboForm and LastPass both have an emergency access feature. This is a feature that allows you to appoint one or more designated individuals who can access your account in the event of an emergency.

Emergency access is not available for free users on either RoboForm or LastPass. You’ll need to be a paid subscriber to be able to set this up.

You will also be able to set up a timeout or waiting period before your emergency contact is granted access. This will ensure that if your emergency contact cannot get into your account without your permission or if you’re only temporarily incapacitated.

RoboForm’s Security Center will alert you when your passwords are vulnerable and provide recommendations for updating your login credentials to improve your online security.

Account Recovery

If you forget your RoboForm master password, you have a few options for recovering your account:

• If you have the mobile app and have enabled biometrics, you can restore your account by enabling the “Master Password Restore” feature.
• If you’ve designated an Emergency Contact, you can ask them to initiate Emergency Access.

As a last resort, you can reset your master password using the “Forgot your password?” form. But be warned that resetting your master password will automatically delete everything in your RoboForm account.

If you lose your LastPass master password, the only way to recover it is by going through their account recovery process.

You won’t be able to use your email to reset your password like you can with RoboForm. Here’s how the account recovery process works:

• On mobile: You’ll use biometrics stored on the device (these must be set up beforehand) to reset your master password. If you haven’t set up biometrics, you’ll need to try to recover your account via another device.
• On desktop: You’ll use a recovery one-time password in the browser extension. This OTP is automatically created and stored when you log into the browser extension. LastPass will email you a link that, when clicked, activates LastPass to find the OTP and then you’ll be prompted to create a new master password.

Overall, I think LastPass’ account recovery options are slightly better as they allow you to recover your account without biometric authentication and without having to delete your entire vault of password data.

LastPass is incredibly easy to set up. Managing your passwords in the Vault is very intuitive. You can easily import/export or even share passwords in bulk.
